Naval Base Coronado is located over the San Diego bay and operated by the US Navy. The base was built on Silver Strand, close to the Pacific Ocean. It is an important and vital base for the US Navy due to hosting around 30 tenant units. It hosts more than 5000 military troops, with 7000 constantly changing students and reserve troops.
History
The base was opened in 1944, during World War II. The authorization was given by the US government in 1943. It started as an amphibious training bases and quickly raised to be among the most important ones on the West Coast. As a matter of fact, it is one of the two such bases located in the United States of America. It covers over 4 square km and includes multiple beaches used for training sessions, housing facilities, recreational spots, parks and a main base. It is “cut” by Highway 75. The highway separates the base into two completely different parts – the ocean side and the bay side. The training sessions are performed on both sides. During World War II, the Pacific operations started from this site were proven to be critical and conclusive for the end of the war. Some of the streets in the camp are named in the memory of the most important battles on Japanese territories, such as Tulagi, Tarawa or Guadalcanal.
The initial objectives included underwater demolition training and preparation for the Navy SEALs, the Brown Water Navy troops and the reserve soldiers. The objectives changed a little in 1946, after the base was renamed to what it is today. The general purpose was now providing logistical and administrative support for all the amphibious troops on the base. Naval Base Coronado California is also responsible for testing the latest technologies and military equipments for amphibious operations.
Units
Naval Base Coronado is among the large bases of the state, therefore expect to find more units than in other bases. Some of the most important ones include the Amphibious Construction Battalion 1, the Expeditionary Warfare Training for Pacific, the Naval Special Warfare Group 1 with its four SEAL subdivisions, the Tactical Air Control Group 1 or the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1. Each of these commands has a few subdivisions. Besides, the base also hosts multiple associate and tenant units.
Housing
The housing system at Naval Base Colorado is controlled by the Personnel Support Detachment North Island. The main office is in building 515. In order to get in touch with it, you might want to contact it early on the telephone and not just wait until you get there to do it in person. For on site relocation, you will have to fill an application. It cannot be processed instantly, therefore you will have to wait for weeks or even months. This is why being early is your best option.
The students are automatically hosted inside the base, in various camps. They don’t need any applications or to go through any bureaucratic processes.
