MCLB Barstow

Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow is located in the immediate proximity – only 6 kilometers – of the city with the same name, in the southern part of California. The installation is run by the United States Marine Corps. It is better known among the officials for the Logistics Bases’ Maintenance Center. There are only two such facilities in the United States of America and this is one of them. The other one is in Albany, Georgia. The two bases are almost identical in build, mission and objectives. The location is extremely useful for the base, since it is at the intersection of three different highways, close to the most important rail traffic hub and near an airport. It is also the largest and most important single employer in the area.

History

MCLB Barstow was established on December, 28-th, 1942, as a depot. It was commissioned to the United States Navy. A few years later, the US Navy decided to hand it over to the US Marine Corps. It was an excellent asset, especially for the major role the base played throughout World War II in the Pacific theater. It saw an amazing ascension during the war. At some point, it became too crowded to be able to host any other new units or tenants. Soon after World War II ended, the US Marine Corps acquired 8 square kilometers more. The land was taken from the US Army, which operated a nearby facility, in 1946. The real ascension began in 1954, when the Depot of Supplies headquarters was established on site. The base gained in power and size continuously since then. The Depot Maintenance Activity was also relocated at the base, placing even more responsibilities on the officials’ shoulders.

These days, MCLB Barstow consists of three particular areas. The largest one covers 10 square kilometers and includes a few rifle training sites. The other two are called Yermo Annex and Nebo Annex. Each of them spreads over 8 square kilometers. Yermo Annex maintains the initial mission of the base and deals with storage missions. On the other hand, Nebo Annex hosts all the other facilities, including the headquarters and the most important centers and facilities. Nebo Annex is actually a census designated place. It is responsible for the housing opportunities too.

Mission

The primary mission of MCLB Barstow is to support the United States Marine Corps, but also the United States Army or other institutions. It maintains the troops in a ready-to-go position by providing multiple services and logistics. The good going of the base is maintained through hard work, teamwork, a continuous update and responsiveness.

Maintaining some proper facilities on site is also among the missions. The military troops can come with the best capacity only when in a good mood and their families are happy. The officials aim to help the civilian families get over the small shock when relocating to a military base, therefore there are a lot of regular facilities, such as community clubs, society centers, recreational sites and shopping centers.
