Camp Schway is a military co-base operated by the United States of America on Japanese territories. The base is located in the northern part of Okinawa and is often referred to as Man Camp. It was named in the memory of Albert E. Schwab, a Marine who got the Medal of Honor posthumously for his brave actions. He “starred” in the battle of Okinawa. It was the toughest battle the Americans had to take on Japanese lands. The battle took a while and saw plenty of casualties on both sides. Many heroic acts took place during the fight and dozens of officers got awarded with the Medal of Honor. Albert E. Schwab had less than a year in the United States Marine Corps. He was killed on May, 7-th, 1945, after he singlehandedly took two Japanese guns out of action. His actions saved his unit, which was pinned down and turned into a certain victim. The base is now operated and controlled by the United States Marine Corps and part of a larger complex of similar installations. Since the battle was rough enough, the Americans decided to establish multiple facilities. Ten of them were gathered in one single complex and were spread over the Okinawa island, from north to south.
History
The place Camp Schwab is located in was previously used by the Japanese forces during World War II. It was a powerful installation that launched plenty of deadly attacks over the Americans. Once the Americans gained control over the Okinawa island, most facilities were taken over and some new ones were raised. The future of this base was uncertain until 1959, when it was set up as a permanent installation. The base is also part of the agreement the United States of America have with Japan. According to a contract signed in 1952, the USA are supposed to defeat Japan against any military invasion. Therefore, no matter how calm things are in this area, the military troops are supposed to stick around.
Just like many other bases, Camp Schwab is also in an unofficial standby position. One of the most important events of its recent history is negative and implies the death of one Marine. Two others were critically wounded, but they survived. They were part of an ordnance disposal unit that was supposed to get some explosives in a safe area and detonate them. The explosion occurred earlier than it was supposed to due to an accident. The event took place in the spring of 2009.
Over the years, Camp Schwab had a hard time with the natives. There was a constant tension in the area and minor, yet frequent clinches between the two parts, as the natives never agreed with the military presence in the area, especially since it is American.
Mission
Camp Schwab is responsible for all the missions and operations conducted by the main unit on site – the 4-th Marine Regiment. It also supports the entire Marine Corps, in any of its actions. The site serves as a training range for about 30,000 troops deployed on the island.
