Buckley AFB Colorado
Established soon after the United States of America joined World War II, Buckley AFB is located in Aurora, in a relatively centered position in Colorado. It was named in the memory of John Harold Buckley, one of the pilots who were killed in World War I in France. The base is run by the Air Force and hosts close to 100000 individuals, representing one of the largest military bases in the United States of America. It has a defensive purpose and aims to protect the country with advanced and early missile warnings, space and air surveillance and communications.
History
The base history dates back to 1943. The local authorities decided to purchase almost 6000 acres and donate them to the army, in an attempt to increase the security in the area. It took less than a year to the 336-th AAF Base Unit to raise over 700 buildings, including a technical training school. The place grew as one of the most important bases, whether you consider its first years or the current times. Over World War II, it trained over 50000 pilots. When World War II ended, the mission of the base was quite ambiguous. No one knew what to do with it. Most operations were ceased, it adopted a standby position and became an auxiliary facility for a nearby military base, which was also transferred to another department.
After spending 12 years under the US Navy command, the base was then taken over by the Air National Guard in 1960. At that time, it was the one and only Air National Guard base on the United States territory. Buckley AFB played a major role in the upcoming wars and conflicts, such as the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile conflicts or the USS Pueblo problems.
With the end of the Cold War, the operations remained just as active at the base. It also joined the latest conflicts led by the United States, such as Northern Watch, Iraqi Freedom or Desert Storm. In 2000, it was transferred to the Air Force. Since that moment, it was taken through an unexpected wave of improvements and modernizations, turning it into one of the military bases with the highest living and military facilities.
Units
The most important unit at Buckley AFB is the 460-th Space Wing. Its main objective is to defend the US territory and provide help whenever the unexpected situations arise outside of the US. The unit consists of three groups – medical, mission support and operations. With close to 100000 individuals hosted on site, there are obviously plenty of associate and tenant units too, such as the Colorado Army National Guard or the NIOC Colorado.
Housing
The facilities on site are excellent. The inhabitants benefit from plenty of free services, including the lawn maintenance operations or the water. In order to be hosted on site, get in touch with the housing office as soon as you find out about your relocation. Fill in an application and wait to be called back. If there aren’t any free spots, you will have to go for a real estate agent and opt for the off site accommodation.
