Contact Information
MCAS New River is the complementary base of Camp Geiger and is located in the eastern side of North Carolina. It is a base designed to deal with helicopters and operated by the Marine Corps. It is very close to Camp Geiger, therefore both bases share some of the facilities. The base has a very interesting motto that pretty much explains what it is about – Pardon our noise, it is the sound of freedom.
History
The construction site was picked by Barnett Robinson, a Marine captain. He was sent to find a proper place to develop an aircraft base for multiple upcoming operations. After weeks of searching, he found a small tobacco farm to be the most appropriate site for what the Marine actually needed. The space included only 29 parcels of land and was purchased in 1941. The construction didn’t take too much, since the base was relatively small. It took longer for the first squadron to show up though, in 1943 – VMSB 331. The base was initially build as a complementary and hosting place for Camp Lejeune. After its commissioning in 1944, it was entirely taken over by the Marine and set up as a particular installation. After the end of World War II, the base was disestablished and took a peaceful, stand-by and caretaker status. It took a few years for the authorities to reactivate it though, in 1951.
When it comes to “personal” records, MCAS New River can brag about the first base in the world dealing and operating with the advanced MV 22 Osprey planes. The planes are well known for their ability to lift and land like a helicopter. While in the air, they fly like any other planes.
These days, the base is involved in the most important actions of the United States, whether these actions imply war situations, humanitarian operations or religious actions. The troops and equipments are always ready to serve the interests of the nation.
Units
MCAS New River is considered to be the home of the Marine Aircraft Group 26 and the Marine Aircraft Group 29. However, there are more inhabitants. It also hosts a part of the 362-nd Training Squadron, the Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 and a small part of the 2-nd Marine Air Control Squadron. Besides, the headquarters and the training center for naval aviation can also be found there.
Housing
When dispatched to MCAS New River, you need to prepare the status of your accommodation from time. You have to analyze your options and decide early whether you will choose a home from the government, a hotel or the privatized system. The hotels might be useful when you stay there for short periods of time. The privatized system comes with more facilities and better looking houses. It is also more expensive than the homes from the government. However, these homes require waiting lists and applications. Therefore, if you want one, fill up an application early. With a bit of luck. It might be processed until you arrive.
