Naval Air Station Oceana is a military base located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. One of its airfields is named Apollo Soucek Field, named in honor of Lieutenant Apollo Soucek who served as a Navy Test Pilot in the 1930s. It was built in 1943 and by the 1950s, it was expanded to Master Jet Base status.
The primary mission of Naval Air Station Oceana is to train and deploy the strike fighter squadrons of the Atlantic Fleet. This includes fighter squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets. The facility supports up to 219,000 flight training operations annually.
The Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress located in Chesapeake, Virginia and the Naval Station Norfolk Chambers Field in Norfolk, Virginia are under the command of Naval Air Station Oceana.
