Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren represents a NSWC division located in the city with the same name, in the eastern part of Virginia. Both the military installation and the human community it is located in are named after John A. Dahlgren, one of the United States Navy leaders and heroes. He led the forces during the American Civil War. He is responsible for testing and implementing some of the most advanced guns and cannons of those times. His work was considered to be one of the definitive factors wherefore the Union forces won the war. Soon after the war ended, he was named as one of the fathers of the American naval weaponry.
The installation is operated by the United States Navy and is split in two major centers – the laboratory, which is located in Dahlgren, and the dam neck, which was established in Virginia Beach. Altogether, the two settlements provide job opportunities for almost 2,500 individuals. Most of them are scientists, whether you count the military troops or the civilian personnel. The base operates in a tight cooperation with Naval Support Facility NSF Indian Head, located in the same state.
