Torii Station is currently the most important military base run by the United States of America in Japan. It is the home of the US Army. It is located close to Okinawa, in Yomitan. Although the profile of the base is military, it is also used for civilian needs. It supports most of the operations required in Okinawa, from fuel supply to port actions. The civilians have access to the SCUBA equipments from Scuba Locker, whether they plan to buy or rent such sets. Other than that, since Yomitan is a small village that mostly concentrates on agriculture, a wide area on site is used for farming activities by the natives. The name was given after the torii used as a gain entrance. The torii is a traditional Japanese element, usually used to mark the entrance of a shrine. Such gates are also used for the Buddhist temples.
The facilities on site come to serve every individual’s needs. The medical system is probably the most important one. Just like any other base from Japan, this one has an advanced medical clinic to support the needs of the troops deployed there. At the same time, the family members are free to choose the clinic they want to involve in from all the nearby bases. For instance, Camp Lester hosts the Naval Hospital, probably the most important such facility in the area. At the same time, the Torii inhabitants benefit from a dental clinic as well. It supports the family members from other bases as well. The overall idea is simple – when deployed to Japan, the Americans share the facilities from one base or another. They work together in a tight net and collaboration. The even better news is that most services are free or for low and insignificant costs.
The recreational areas are part of the whole system as well. When deployed in the middle of an unknown and different civilization, the new culture might be pretty shocking. In order to keep the soldiers entertained, Torii Station hosts more courts for various sports, bars, pubs, clubs, cinema theaters and community centers that provide access to Internet and indoor sports, such as bowling or pool.
The housing system at Torii Station is dealt with locally. You must complete an application as soon as you hear about the relocation. The application includes your family requirements, rank and duration of your stay. According to your answers, an assigned sponsor will give you the best options. However, the on site accommodation is not mandatory. You may also rely on the Japanese off site system, which is privatized. The off site accommodation obviously provides more opportunities, although the costs might be a bit higher. It is excellent if you truly want to experience the Japanese lifestyle.
Some of the most important units housed at Torii Station include the 10-th Support Group, the 247-th MP DET, the 58-th SIG BN and the 83-rd ORD BN. There are a few associate units hosted on the base too, but they are not that important.
