Camp Spearhead is among the military bases established by the United States of America in Kuwait. Although it was entirely run by the Americans, the base was heavily used by the United Kingdom as well, especially during the past decade. The camp is located in Shuaiba, in the immediate proximity of Camp Patriot. Just like a few other similar bases in Kuwait, this one was also popular among the American troops for its excellent facilities. It has the reputation of a place that makes soldiers feel like home. It is close to one of Kuwait’s largest ports, therefore it has a great opening and a strategical position. The port is vital for the oil transportation and the growing industry of Kuwait. Four of the twenty berths are exclusively used by container ships.
History
The history of Camp Spearhead dates back to the ’60s. It was initially established as Ash Shuaybah in 1967 and it was a new and advanced port in Kuwait back then. Aside from the oil, the port was also responsible for petrochemical materials, sulfur and coke. These days, things haven’t changed too much. In fact, the port operations are now taken over by the local port in Shuaiba, while the base has been used by the United States of America for quite a while now. While under American “occupation”, the base served in the Kuwait invasion by Iraq. It was also used as a healing center. As time passed by and the war on terrorism began, the operations changed their directions a little, as the United States of America invaded Iraq and used Kuwait as the main gate.
Mission
The primary mission of Camp Spearhead was to support all the operations in the area in any possible way. However, the military purposes of this camp were not fully developed. These days, its objective is to help the tired and sick soldiers who need some relaxation. This doesn’t mean the camp is fully developed to entertain the troops. Recovering implies relaxing activities, but also staying fit or recovering after a severe injury.
Facilities
Most tents at Camp Spearhead benefit from air conditioning machines. The place is located in a dry area of Kuwait, therefore many soldiers have a hard time fighting with the hot weather conditions. The air conditioners are among the best facilities for such a region. While the water used for showering and baths is unlimited, the potable one has to be supplied by various contractors. However, the comfort is not everything. The troops deployed on site also gain access to a wide variety of entertainment possibilities. The physical activity is a must, so there are a few gyms and fitness clubs to rely on. The board games are just as popular for those who want to relax after a hot and exhausting day. When the night steps in, the soldiers are free to watch a movie at one of the several recreational centers.
The troops on site also benefit from an Internet connection to communicate with their families. This is actually one of the few camps that benefit from a Facebook group.
