Station Maui is among the important and most active military installations run and operated by the United States Coast Guard. That is because it hosts a few units of the 14-th District. The 14-th District is the largest division in the US Coast Guard. It is responsible for the entire Hawaii, not to mention about a few minor islands in the immediate closeness. In other words, there are more than 22 million square miles this district has to deal with. It is extremely active and can always use more men. It is commanded by Stephen E. Mehling. Aside from Station Maui, the district has twelve more stations spread around the islands. A similar station is located in Japan – Far Eastern Activities. It is operated under the Japanese laws and regulations and works in a tight collaboration with the Japanese authorities. Other than that, the district can rely on nine different cutters, therefore it has plenty of equipments to supports its mission.
Mission
Station Maui was established at Maalaea Harbor, which is generally seen as one of the few gates towards a lot of recreational sites, resorts and commercial activities. Therefore, the activity is pretty intense on site. The crew deployed there provides safety operations and law enforcement activities round the clock. In order to face the activity influx, the officials often collaborate with other similar institutions that relatively have the same objectives. The list includes the police, the fire service, the lifeguards or NOAA. As long as they can help, they will definitely do it. In other words, the general objectives of Station Maui confound with the United States Coast Guard mission. This means the troops deal with law enforcement activities, but mostly with the environmental and maritime protection and SAR (Search And Rescue) missions. Since there are plenty of tourists around this place, there is a lot of activity. Whether some fisherman is lost far from the shores or someone suffers a heart attack, the US Coast Guard will take the call right away and rush to the victim.
History
Station Maui is not among the oldest US Coast Guard stations. Although its history is pretty short, it has definitely managed to make a reputation due to the intense activity and the impressive success rate. The station was established in 1990, but the US Coast Guard was familiar with this area even since 1959. The first units joined it for patrolling missions in 1959. There was just one cutter patrolling in the area back then – Cape Rosier. It fulfilled its mission for about a decade, when it was replaced by Cape Newagen in 1969. Cape Corwin was the third cutter that stepped in, also in 1969. This third cutter was taken away in 1990. At that time, the activity around Maui increased, so the US Coast Guard decided it was the time for a new installation. This is how Station Maui was brought to life. No other cutters joined the installation since Cape Corwin was decommissioned. However, the troops have a few boots to rely on.
