History
The Quartermaster Department of The Army originally built a depot at New Cumberland in 1918 because of its strategic location on the Susquehanna River. The depot was designated as the Marsh Run Storage Depot. During World War I the Marsh Run Storage Depot was used as a distribution and storage point for supplies going to the Europe. At the close of World War I the Marsh Run Storage Depot was redesignated as an Army Reserve Depot for storage of chemical wear, quartermaster, engineering, signal and ordinance material.
During the Vietnam War era the Marsh Run Storage Depot received aircraft maintenance shops and hangers for US Army helicopters and fixed wing aircraft and in 1962 the facility name was changed to the New Cumberland Army Depot. During this era the New Cumberland Army Depots primary focus was the repair and overhaul twin rotor CH-47 Chinook helicopters, specially replacing worn out rotor blades. In April of 1976 it was suggested that aircraft maintenance and repair responsibility at New Cumberland be moved to Corpus Christi Texas for the sake of efficiency and consolidation. In 1984 all aircraft maintenance operations, rotary and fixed wing, were stopped at the New Cumberland Army Depot.
Following the removal of aircraft maintenance responsibilities the mission of the New Cumberland Army Depot was changed to focus solely on being a supply depot. In 1992 command of the New Cumberland Army Depot was changed from the U.S. Army Depot System Command to the Defense Logistics Agency and three other facilities were combined within it.
Primary and Ancillary functions
The primary mission of the New Cumberland Army Depot is to be massive military supply facility for military installations including providing supplies directly from the manufacturer to units. The New Cumberland Army Depot provides military and commercial repair parts, textiles and clothing, medical supplies and electronic components to military units and customers worldwide. The New Cumberland Army Depot is actually the single largest Department of Defense wholesale distribution site in the United States.
The New Cumberland Army Depot is a combination of three smaller Department of Defense Logistics facilities: Administrative Support Center East (ASCE), Defense Distribution Region East (DDRE) Headquarters and Defense Distribution Depot Susquehanna Pennsylvania (DDSP).
In recent years the New Cumberland Army Depot has paved the way for efficiency with the institution of the Recycling Control Point. This program is an automated process for classification and disposal of excess personal property stored at Defense Logistics Agency facilities. The New Cumberland Army Depot in conjunction with eight other facilities in the Defense Logistics Agency network help to cut cost by several million dollars annually with the Recycling Control Point program.
