USCG ISC Honolulu – Integrated Support Command – is one of the major military facilities operated by the United States Coast Guard in Honolulu, Hawaii. The unit has a major role on the island. Its headquarters is located in the immediate proximity of the local international airport, in the western part of the city. The base is commanded by Captain John Hickey and fulfills its mission and objectives with not less than 200 employees, coming from both the civilian and military fields. There are also around 1,000 troops organized in associate tenants. They are deployed on site for small periods of time. They come and go on a regular basis.
Mission
USCG ISC Honolulu supports all the missions conducted by the United States of America, regardless of the purpose. Its primary mission is to deal with the national defense. It supports all the military troops deployed in the area, whenever it is needed. The command is responsible for quite a lot of civilian operations too, especially since many of the employees are civilian contractors and scientists. The center is not physically involved in the common operations. These scientists will never get on a helicopter to pursue search and rescue (SAR) operations, patrol over the ice blocks in Alaska, look after oil spills and ensure the environmental protection. Instead, their main objectives include assistance jobs and engineering missions.
Although it is a bit unusual for a military command in the United States Coast Guard, USCG ISC Honolulu is also responsible for the health care system in the human communities nearby. The units conduct medical operations in these communities to help those in need.
The lifestyle of those deployed from other parts of the country at USCG ISC Honolulu is just as important for the base officials. In some parts, Hawaii implies some large living costs, while the lifestyle is quite different compared to the rest of the country. This aspect may not be a problem for a soldier, but once the civilian families must relocate, things suddenly become harder. This is why the officials aim to provide great housing facilities for start. When on site, the individuals can rely on a post exchange, gym and fitness clubs, recreational areas and places, swimming pools and snack bars.
History
USCG ISC Honolulu was first a lighthouse. The installation was established when the lighthouse got under the jurisdiction of the United States Coast Guard, in 1939. By 1945, the facility expanded a little, got a few more facilities and buildings and improved its mission. If in its first years it only dealt with the maintenance and reparation of lighthouses, by 1945 it started supporting the military troops deployed in the area too.
The expansion has not stopped until the ’80s. Multiple comptroller commands joined USCG ISC Honolulu, while the authorities decided to take in consideration the health care system too and opened a general clinic and a dental one. The place was not large enough to house the housing facilities, so they were moved in a nearby human community – Red Hill. In 1988, the base was assigned a few more responsibilities, such as SAR (Search And Rescue) operations and law enforcement.
