Debunking Security Clearance Myths
There are lots of myths circulating out there about security clearances.
Today I will debunk some of those myths for you.
1. You have to have a security clearance before applying for government jobs.
Some jobs in government require a security clearance. If you don’t have a clearance now, you have to be “ready clearance.”
As long as you have a clean record and will be able to pass a clearance investigation, you can get hired and then apply for the security clearance
2. The pay for government jobs is below the pay in the private sector.
This is a common misconception. Most government jobs pay the same as the equivalent private sector jobs.
3. A government job dilutes your resume and makes it harder to get a private sector job in the future.
Not so. Hardworking military personnel and federal employees are valued in the private sector.
You just have to be able to translate the specialized jargon of your field in terms the private sector can understand, so they see the value you have to bring.
4. It takes months to be hired for government jobs.
Sometimes the time to get hired is as short as 2-4 weeks. So don’t despair.
Also, remember there are more than 20,000 job openings in the government at any time.
