Fort A.P. Hill Virginia
Fort A. P. Hill Virginia is located close to the town of Bowling Green and is one of the largest and most important US military installments on the East Coast. As it describes itself, it is the place where the United States sharpens its forces in every domain. The base is about 76000 acres in size and includes some of the most advanced technologies. More than 28000 acres are used for a professional training field including fire weapons and over 100 ranges. Military units from all over the country gather here for training, whether they deal with small operations or major exercises with advanced weapons. The base is operated and controlled by the US Army. It was named in the honor of Ambrose Power Hill, one of the Confederate Army lieutenants during the American Civil War.
History
Once the Revolutionary War was over in the United States, most weapons and ammunition sets were hosted at New London for dozens of years. This is the place where the new base was built. In 1940, the base came out at the idea of raising an advanced camp willing to host over 4M army men for the operations in Europe and the Pacific Ocean. The place was chosen by Oliver Marston, an artillery officer looking for the ideal site. The result was the purchase of 77000 acres and 74 buildings operated by over 800 individuals. During World War II, Fort A. P. Hill Virginia was the home of multiple units.
Other than World War II, the base didn’t play any major roles in other wars, except for the Korean War. It played an indirect role. It never sent any troops in Asia. Instead, they were sent to Europe for new orders and destinations.
These days, the fort is extremely important for the good going of the operational forces throughout the world. It trained troops for Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other less important conflicts. It also works on a year-round principle, therefore it sends out graduates on the line.
Housing
The housing system depends on your purpose at the base. The base hosts newcomers every years, but usually for small periods of time. When in a training mission, the newcomers are automatically hosted at one of the camps. The training missions may last for months or years. Aside from this category of newcomers, there are also the ones who get there for longterm assignments. The system is different for them. They will need to apply for a home. It doesn’t matter if they want to rent or to buy one. The application process takes months. If in a hurry, they can also rely on the privatized system, which is a bit more expensive.
If interested in recreational lodging, the spots are limited too. You need to make early reservations. The recreational lodging gives you access to training facilities if you want to stay in shape. It is among the favorite options for reserve troops who like to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay fit.
