Gulfport Battalion Center deals with the general military construction, regardless of the location. The troops working in this battalion are often referred to as the Seabees. The name comes from the group initials – CB. The reputation of this group is huge. It is responsible for building both common and sophisticated military constructions and thousands of kilometers of airstrips and roads in most of the military theaters they were involved in. Such actions began in World War II.

History

The first Seabees were actually civilian constructors and engineers. They have always been the building arm of the United States Navy, even since the first days they were founded. The history of this group dates back to 1942, when the first workers were sent to build various constructions in the Pacific area, as well as in Europe. One of the most important achievements of this unit is the 16,000 kilometer long road that surpassed the jungle and the corals to reach Tokyo. That major accomplishment was not the final one though. Although Gulfport Battalion Center was initially built to support the US Navy throughout World War II, its actions didn’t stop when Japan surrendered. In fact, the huge success turned it into a permanent unit. At some point, there were more than 25,000 Seabees in Vietnam dealing with camps, tents, bridges, roads, airstrips and so on. Their work didn’t include the military constructions only. Instead, they helped building orphanages, schools and hospitals too. However, the military work was always a priority.

In the summer of 1990, Gulfport Battalion Center had a new role in Operation Desert Shield. There were almost 2,500 Seabees deployed in Saudi Arabia, with around 12,000 tons of raw materials. The devastating effects of Hurricane Andrew over Florida required the help of these professionals as well, not to mention about the deployments for the Haitian Relief operations or Operation Joint Endeavor in Croatia and Bosnia.

If you count the more recent conflicts, Operation Enduring Freedom from Afghanistan was probably the most important one, especially as it came as the first battle in the war against terrorism. The Seabees were not forgotten when the Iraq invasion began too, in 2003. Operation Iraqi Freedom had a close call in Operation Iraqi Freedom II, therefore the troops are still kept in the southwestern side of Asia.

These days, Gulfport Battalion Center is by far one of the most important and advanced military bases run by the US Navy.

Mission

The mission of this base is simple. Judging by the wide variety of past actions, it is not hard to figure out that providing raw materials and construction services to the US Navy is the primary objective. The group doesn’t really have a military purpose, but just a slight connection with this world as it operates during such times.

Gulfport Battalion Center is actually a center for constructors and building engineers. It is strictly specialized in military constructions. The speed these professionals work with is hard to describe, as every minute may be vital in a problematic area.
