Former base for archive purpose only. Not active anymore
Camp Virginia is one of the 15 US bases located in Kuwait. These days, only 7 of them are still active and this one is among them. The others are no longer existent. The camp used to host around 10000 soldiers in its most important times. These days, the number is growing again due to the conflicts in close regions, such as Iraq. The aspect of this camp is different than others outside of the US. If the bases in Europe or Asia benefit from the latest technologies, this one is very simple. It is an amalgam of tents, simple buildings, metallic frames and supply depots spread over a few square km in the desert. There is nothing else as you throw your eyes over the edges. Once in a while, army vehicles use this post as a pit stop, as well as many civilian cars.
History
The camp, as well as all the others in Kuwait, was established soon after Operation Desert Storm was over. The primary objectives were relatively simple. The US forces decided to leave enough battalions in the area to protect Kuwait against any wars, especially against Iraq. The troops left there didn’t just defend the country, but they also trained the local soldiers in the latest war techniques. In other words, this was an indirect start for the Iraq invasion.
These days, the objectives have changed a little. Camp Virginia plays a major role against countries like Iraq and Afghanistan as well. The operations against Iraq were the most important ones. With millions of gallons of oil and fuel, the camp was extremely useful for the tanks and armored vehicles that were supposed to head to Baghdad. Everything was possible through a 220 miles long pipeline from the camp to Iraq. This means the vehicles could also stop on the way to refuel.
Units
The units hanging around the camp come from multiple countries, mostly from US allied countries. There are currently soldiers from England, as well as South Korea. When it comes to American troops, you can count soldiers from the Navy, the US Army or the Marine, not to mention about the National Guard troops. Two of the most important companies dealing with the security include the Bravo and the Alaska’s Delta troops. The Delta troops deal with the escort operations, while the Bravo ones rely on repetitive actions, such as maintaining a safe perimeter and patrolling around.
Housing
The housing system here is easy to deal with. If you want to get here, you will get in the same tent with a few other troops. There is no place for families here. This is not the type of basic US base that hosts military personnel and their families. It is a place where war can strike within the next hour or the next year. People live in tents or barracks. The buildings are actually long prefab tents. They are split into multiple small rooms. Each such room hosts a few soldiers. The conditions are rough and there is no such thing as a proper facility from the modern world.
