Located in the city with the same name, Naval Support Activity Norfolk is currently the most important military base operated by the United States Navy for the Atlantic Fleet. The base is established inside of a larger facility in the same city – Naval Station NS Norfolk. This tenant is run by Charles P. Melcher. The “mother” base – NS Norfolk – operates in multiple parts of the world. Aside from the Atlantic Ocean, it is also responsible for the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The air missions on site turn this base into one of the most active ones. With one flight at every six minutes, the officials can brag with more than 100,000 flights every year. All these facts, the units hosted on site and the wide variety of missions and objectives turn NS Norfolk into one of the most important military installations of the Navy. Since NSA Norfolk is part of it, its importance is obvious. The tenant is mostly responsible for the Atlantic operations.
Mission
The primary mission of NSA Norfolk is to support the United States Navy and the Department of Defense, regardless of the missions assigned. All these operations are conducted through NS Norfolk, where the officials assign them to the most appropriate units and tenants. This unit deals with the operations conducted in the Atlantic field. One of the most important assignments is to maintain, repair and renovate all the facilities the fleet needs to work properly.
Other than that, the personnel on site is just as important. One of the primary missions is to provide full housing opportunities for each of its members, starting with the military troops and ending with the civilians, whether they are workers, contractors or families. Besides, the welfare of these inhabitants is not forgotten either. The recreational sites and areas make people feel like home. The facilities include snack bars, outdoor courts, dining facilities, community centers and so on. For most of these people, living in a military base is almost as good as living in a civilian community.
History
The history of NSA Norfolk is not too impressive. In fact, most of its operations are tightly connected with the NS Norfolk missions, so most of the merits are associated to the larger base after all. The Atlantic Fleet command joined the site in 1948. Hundreds of staff members were brought along too. It was the most important move that defined the current activities and objectives of the installation.
In 1977, things went even further. After a long study that took a few months, the authorities decided to set up the HSA (Headquarters Support Activity) on site as well. The operations suddenly increased in intensity, since the HSA was responsible for logistics, transportation, particular services and operations, fiscal issues, maintenance, administrative problems and supply, therefore the unit became as complete as it could be.
A small reconstruction process slightly affected NSA Norfolk in 1987. A similar one occurred in 1999. Although still referred to as NSA Norfolk, the base was allowed to change its name in 2011. These days, it is officially known as NSA Hampton Roads.
