Dobbins ARB is based in Marietta, Georgia and positioned 16 miles Northwest of Atlanta. This base is the largest multi-service reserve training in the world consisting of around 2,500 reservists and civilians. This base also contains more than 2000 Marines, Navy, and Army reservists. The 94th Airlift wing is the unit host of Dobbins including other tenant organizations like the 22nd Air Force headquarters, Naval Air Station, and the Georgia Army National Guard. Virtually 50 different aircrafts are appointed to different units at Dobbins and nearly 7000 take-offs and landing happen monthly at Dobbins ARB.
History
In 1943, Marietta Army Airfield was built and the name changed to Dobbins Air Force Base in 1950 in honor of Caption Charles Dobbin’s death which took place during WW2 when his C-47 was shot down into the Mediterranean Sea. The base was originally built to be an alternate field for Atlanta, Georgia’s Candler Field. With WWII starting, the field came into possession of the US Army Air Force. After the war, Marietta Army Field became home to units for the Georgia National Guard and Air Force Reserve Units. The airfield became Marietta Air Force Base in 1948 when the United States Air Force was created and then to Dobbins AFB. In June 1992, it changed again to its current name, Dobbins ARB. Today, Dobbins ARB is the only US military facility in north Georgia.
Units
The 94th Airlift Wing is divided into three groups, a headquarters element, and a medical element involving twelve squadrons and one flight. The 94th Airlift Wing is there to give experienced Citizen Airmen who executes multifarious and trustworthy C-130 operations. For this to work, the wing trains and systemize Air Force Reservists for emergency or in time for wars. The wings aircrew utilize the C-130H aircraft to distribute cargo and recourses to locations ranging from dirt runways to international airports. Flight crews will also distribute paratroopers and equipment by airdrop during times in need.
