MCB Hawaii is an American military base located in the Mokapu Peninsula of Honolulu. According to a census of 2000, there were a little under 12,000 inhabitants of the base. The base hosted sailors and Marines, not to mention about their families. Other than that, there are also civilian employees dealing with various jobs and activities. The 2951 acres wide military base is placed between two of the most important O’ahu communities – Kāne’ohe and Kallua. Aside from the camp, the peninsula also hosts two major natural reservations. In other words, there was no better place to locate this camp than in a living paradise.

History

The Marine Corps Base Hawaii history starts back in 1918, when president Woodrow Wilson decided to allow a little over 300 acres for a new military base. The base was given serious attention in the years before World War II. The first artillery troops got there in 1941. Bad luck or sad coincidence, the same year ended with a disaster for the base. Although it was not powerful enough to fight at a high scale, it was in the way of the Japanese planes that were flying to attack Pearl Harbor. Fort Hase – as it was called back then – was hit 9 minutes before the planes reached Pearl Harbor. The attacks were devastating and the base was taken out of the war within minutes.

It was then disestablished and abandoned for three years, between 1949 and 1952. However, the upcoming decade came with a lot of good things. The base went through a lot of changes, upgrades and reparation operations. The units inhabiting the area also changed multiple times, as well as the general objectives of the camp.

These days, the camp is considered to be more secure than always. As a matter of fact, the current president of the United States – Barack Obama – has chosen the Winter White House about 1 km south of the base. While visiting the area, the president always hangs around the base to hold some speeches, encourage the soldiers and have dinner with them.

Facilities

The facilities at MCB Hawaii are not extraordinary, but more than enough to satisfy everyone’s needs. The climate is mild, while the area is very quiet and relaxing. It might be a bit boring for the people coming from large cities. Besides, the only touristic spots are the two natural reservations. Other than that, it is an excellent place for the wildlife lovers.

The internal facilities are great. You have electricity, Internet and TV cable, not to mention about most services you can find in every large city, from hospitals and dental offices to schools, parks and recreational areas.

Housing

The housing system in MCB Hawaii is relatively limited. There is no place for expansion, therefore the authorities are stuck to what they have. There is enough room to host any temporarily deployed officers though. Therefore, a few extra families won’t make any difference. The system is based on a lot of paperwork and bureaucratic processes.
