Contact Information
National Strike Force (NSF) is owned and operated by the United States Coast Guard and responsible for dealing with a safe environment. Just like the officials like to describe it, the units are always open for any situation, at any given time and for any particular hazard implying oil spills. In a world where everyone runs after oil and natural gas, the accidents are just as popular. The harsher they are, the more severe the damage is. This is when these professionals step in. Although operated by the US Coast Guard, the installation provides training sessions and experienced troops for any armed force dealing with such issues. The unit hosts around 200 individuals, counting military troops, civilian workers and reserve troops. It also includes five different teams and centers, with the NSFCC Coordination Center as the most important one.
Mission
National Strike Force has the clear mission to ensure a safe and green environment whenever unexpected situations arise. It is mostly responsible for the issues caused by oil spills. Such problems are very common and they cause a lot of trouble, especially for the marine life. In some situations, the pollution may be so aggressive that it can affect the coastal human communities too. This is when these experts become mandatory. Aside from the oil spills, any hazardous substances that become problematic are also taken care of. The general idea is not just to protect the environment, but also the public health.
However, this is not all. National Strike Force aims for the mass destruction weapons that might affect the population. Whether the country is under attack or various tests go wrong, the unit is ready to join and solve the situation. It supports all the Coast Guard units and bases, as well as the Federal Response Regions.
Providing proper facilities for the troops is just as important, especially if they got relocated from other parts of the country. Such things are even more important for the troops who are married and must relocate with their families. Various facilities, such as the housing opportunities, are extremely important.
History
National Strike Force was established in 1973 and consisted of three teams located in NC, CA and AL. Each of these strike teams had precisely seventeen members. The organization was very strict during the first years, but all these things changed after 1990. Both the organization and the mission were changed. A new law regarding the oil spills showed up, therefore the force had to adapt its objectives and mission. The restructuring process was also part of this change. The change was also influenced by an act released in 1986. It was the one and only major change in the history of this unit. Nothing else has changed since 1990.
The main team in the unit – NSF Coordination Center – went through a few other changes in 1991, as the activities gained more intensity and responsibility. Over the history, the unit has been the main player in a lot of accidents caused by the oil spills and not only. National Strike Force also played a role during the deadly attacks over World Trade Center in 2001.
