Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren represents a NSWC division located in the city with the same name, in the eastern part of Virginia. Both the military installation and the human community it is located in are named after John A. Dahlgren, one of the United States Navy leaders and heroes. He led the forces during the American Civil War. He is responsible for testing and implementing some of the most advanced guns and cannons of those times. His work was considered to be one of the definitive factors wherefore the Union forces won the war. Soon after the war ended, he was named as one of the fathers of the American naval weaponry.
The installation is operated by the United States Navy and is split in two major centers – the laboratory, which is located in Dahlgren, and the dam neck, which was established in Virginia Beach. Altogether, the two settlements provide job opportunities for almost 2,500 individuals. Most of them are scientists, whether you count the military troops or the civilian personnel. The base operates in a tight cooperation with Naval Support Facility NSF Indian Head, located in the same state.
The mission of NSWC Dahlgren makes this division extremely important for the United States Navy. It is actually responsible for presenting the latest equipments and technologies to be implemented. The base designs, develops, tests and maintains some of the most advanced weaponry systems. It is a premier center for the US Navy. It all starts with comprehensive research operations. Then, the actual weapons are ready to be developed and tested. When they appear to be successful, they are immediately adopted by the US Navy. The positive results of this division reflect the professional attitude and the years of experience of the scientists employed on site. There are experts in evaluation, development, technology, research, test and science. The operations are meant to support all the needs of the US Navy in the present, but also to push the technological limits and prepare the military troops for tomorrow’s mission.
NSWC Dahlgren is responsible for amazing facilities on site too. Most employees are among the finest scientists in the United States of America. Their families have no role in these advanced operations though. The schools, health care clinics and family centers on site can make everyone feel like home. The recreational activities are just as popular. People may relax in a snack bar, at a movie or in a society club. When it comes to outdoor opportunities, there are basketball and golf courts, swimming pools, parks for picnics and so on. With all these, the housing is among the most advanced services at NSWC Dahlgren. If a soldier’s family is happy, the soldier will be happy too.
The beginnings of NSWC Dahlgren date back to the autumn of 1918, when the base was established as a naval proving ground. It got its current mission during the ’50s, when it was renamed again to better define its objectives. The current name was acquired in 1990. The center played a significant role during most of the wars in the 20-th century. Its weapons have significantly increased the military power of the United States of America.
