Mission
A few people can actually understand the importance of finances in the United States Coast Guard. Often associated with military objectives and purposes, the military branch is responsible for plenty of operations, including search and rescue missions or environmental actions. First of all, the apparition of Finance Center has helped the officials organize this particular aspect better. It also maintains all the information in one database and establishes a better and more effective connection with the US Treasury.
Another important duty of this center is to organize and distribute all the money flowing in from the United States government. Every year, a particular sum is allocated to the US Coast Guard. The money must be distributed accordingly around the country and to each base and installation. This is why Finance Center is also responsible for evaluating each particular facility. The needs and requirements of each base must be taken in consideration for the money to be allocated correctly. In order to fulfill this mission, the officials operate in a tight collaboration with the private finance institutions and logistics centers of each base. However, the allocation is not everything. Once the money is sent to one particular direction, the center will follow the way it improves and the way the money is spent.
In other words, Finance Center implies a better organization and effectiveness.
History
Prior to setting up such a professional service, the United States Coast Guard used to rely on a wide network of individual centers and services spread throughout the country. There was an office for every few bases and installations. Making a whole plan implied a real challenge, as gathering all the information and needs was almost impossible. This is how the officials reached to the conclusion that they needed a better organization. It was a futuristic vision. It took the authorities a few years to come up with the best plan, then they began organizing and renovating not less than twenty different offices in Chesapeake, Virginia. This is how Finance Center was brought to life. The institution was commissioned on August, 4-th, 1989. It is one of the youngest institutions in the United States Coast Guard. It is also the only one of its kind in the country.
The first years were pretty rough for the new Finance Center, especially as they mostly implied reorganizing the whole system and adding all the information in one huge database. Once this first task was accomplished, everything else suddenly became a lot easier. Over the years, the center was constantly improved with the latest technologies. These days, it is the only financial service in the United States Coast Guard and fulfills its mission at the highest standards.
